Abstract

In some sectors of cities like Lima, motorcycle taxis have a significant influence on vehicular delays and conflicts. Motorcycle taxis have atypical behavior such as stopping at any point on the road to pick up/drop off passengers and the flow is against it. In this article, the influence of motorcycle taxis on vehicular delays and conflicts near a final BRT station was analyzed using the VISSIM and SSAM programs. The information was collected through drone recordings. These recordings allowed obtaining data such as: vehicular count, pedestrian capacity, and direction of vehicular flows. In addition, the current situation (where the presence of motorcycle taxis is considered) and, on the other hand, the alternative situation (where motorcycle taxis are replaced by conventional vehicles) were simulated, calibrated and validated. Once this analysis was obtained, the SSAM software was used to obtain the vehicular conflicts present in both situations. The most important results of the case study show that motorcycle taxis influence vehicular delays by 18% compared to the case where the motorcycle taxi is replaced by a conventional vehicle. The type of conflict that showed a great impact due to its presence is the crossing conflict, where it was reduced from 47 to 3 conflicts, measured for a TTC of 0 to 0.5.
