Abstract
This research focuses on the seismic vulnerabilities of rural areas, using the town of Sibayo (Peru, South America) as a case study, since they face greater vulnerability due to limited resources and technology. The town of Sibayo is located close to the Pacific Ring of Fire, thus experiencing frequent seismic movements, sometimes generating material and human losses due to the fragility of the dwellings as they are built only with traditional construction techniques. Therefore, the objective of the research was to design a low-cost earthquake-resistant housing prototype, using adobe walls reinforced with rope mesh. The study integrates innovative approaches for local vernacular construction typology exposed to seismic activity and applicable to the town of Sibayo. The methodology involves an exhaustive review of the literature that leads to the design of a housing prototype. The impact of the use of adobe reinforced with nylon rope as a structural and economic treatment will help the residents of the area have a safer and more economical reinforced housing option, thus promoting this option to be taken more into account. The time of construction of a home in Sibayo, for the implementation of a reinforcement that will help the houses have adequate seismic behavior. Likewise, the analysis of the seismic behavior of the prototype indicates a significant improvement for areas prone to earthquakes. Design details consider Sibayo′s unique challenges, including seismic and climatic factors. The proposed prototype not only addresses seismic vulnerabilities, but also ensures economic sustainability, empowering the Sibayo community.
