Abstract

Faced with the new trend of sustainable and economical transport, the city is forced to develop infrastructure and transit technologies to incorporate pedestrians and users with non-motorized vehicles in the urban transport system. This research seeks to evaluate the consequences of optimizing a traffic light cycle with more equitable green times, which improves the movements of pedestrians and non-motorized vehicles (bicycles, scooters, skates, among others), without affecting the traffic of motorized vehicles (cars, buses, trucks and motorcycles). Field data such as speed of motorized and non-motorized vehicles per access, turns and movements per access, volume of motorized and non-motorized vehicles at the intersection, geometric measurements of the intersection; and the current semaphore cycle were taken into account to create a microsimulation in Vissim 9.0 software. This model was calibrated and validated through statistical evaluation, to represent a behavior similar to reality and simulate the current scenario. On the other hand, the field data previously collected was processed in Synchro 8.0 software, to obtain a new optimized traffic light cycle. With the new traffic light cycle obtained, Vissim 9.0 is entered for the microsimulation of the proposed scenario. Finally, 2 microsimulations are obtained, one of the current scenario and the other of the proposed scenario, which were compared using 3 variables to determine the impact of the implementation of a traffic light with more equitable green times. The variables compared were: the length of the queue by access, vehicles stopped by access and delay of vehicles by access. The results reflect an 11% reduction in the delay in vehicle access, an average decrease of 12.5% for the length of the queue, and an average reduction of 5% for vehicles stopped for access.
