Abstract

The analysis of granular soils cut resistance such as gravels implies restrictions on dimensions of conventional laboratory equipment. Therefore, the study of alternative methodologies, for their evaluation, deserve carry out academic researches. An experimental study was carried out on sand samples in order to obtain an expression allowing to correlate the friction angles of samples with original granulometry and samples made with homothetic curves criterion, considering that the granular soils friction angle largely depends on the uniformity coefficient and dilatancy. For that purpose, tests of maximum and minimum density, granulometry and direct shear were carried out. Finally, compacted specimens were tested at 70% relative density. Finally, an expression based on the uniformity coefficient and dilatation estimating the friction angle of the original sand sample was obtained.
