Abstract
This study analyzes the complexity of the urban space where the sculptural ensemble of the Ruta de la Amistad 1968 is located, after its relocation between 2010 and 2023. The study provides an innovative syntagmatic semiotic model that allows us to understand how the overlapping urban layers have buried the historical memory of this cultural heritage in Mexico City. The main methodological contribution lies in the application of spatial-temporary matrices that reveal the relationships between urban-architectural signs of different periods (pre-modern, modern, post-modern and emerging), identifying patterns of heritage decontextualization applicable to other urban monumental sets. The analysis shows that the unplanned superimposition of urban layers has transform the sculptures into “images without memory”, a phenomenon that transcends this specific case. The findings provide a theoretical basis for reconsidering policies of heritage preservation, suggesting that effective protection should contemplate not only physical works but also their original spatial and semiotic relationships with the urban environment.
