Smart Irrigation System for Roses: Enhancing Sustainable Production in Greenhouses through Industry 4.0 and Digital Technologies

Abstract

Greenhouse rose production is often affected by inefficient manual irrigation systems, resulting in excessive water consumption and inconsistent flower quality. This research presents the design and validation of a smart irrigation system that integrates Industry 4.0 digital technologies such as IoT sensors, cloud computing, and adaptive control algorithms. The system monitors soil moisture and environmental variables in real time, enabling precise and efficient water application only when necessary. Implemented in a prototype greenhouse, the solution achieved a 32% reduction in water use while maintaining optimal plant growth. The study highlights the potential of data-driven rule-based control (with AI planned), data driven irrigation automation to improve sustainability, reduce human error, and increase productivity in ornamental horticulture, especially for rose growers in developing countries. This approach can be replicated for other ornamental crops and greenhouse settings in water scarce environments.
