N2 - This paper explains how microtectonic studies, supported by geotechnical and geomechanical criteria, were useful in determining the unidentified critical areas in underground mines from the surface. The microtectonic analysis estimated rock mass stresses affecting a given area, considering the faults and cracks identified both on the surface and underground. This analysis included a range of field studies that helped us understand the behavior of unstable areas in underground works and spot the critical unidentified areas. Thereby, previously unidentified critical zones were identified within the mine. This will help take preventive measures to minimize rockfalls during works and avoid accidents, mainly in active galleries.
