«Some kind of minka»: Audiovisual Translation and Translation Policy in Chanka Quechua Television Dubbing in Peru

The development of pro-multilingualism state policies in Peru involves the implementation of translation services between Spanish and indigenous languages in different communicative contexts. The public broadcasting institute tasked the translation company Torre A with the dubbing of the animated children's series Ciudad Jardín (2020) into Chanka Quechua. It was the first audiovisual product dubbed into this indigenous language. This study seeks to describe the dubbing process of Ciudad Jardín to identify its often atypical or novel features, in comparison with standard dubbing models. Aspects of the process, such as the integration of new professional profiles, the formation of work teams, and the high level of agency demonstrated by the Quechua-speaking participants, are linked with the context of developing translation policies in Peru. The Ciudad Jardín case illustrates how the micropolitics of decision-making within audiovisual translation processes may impact on translation policies.
